Mentor barbershop has family fun while raising money for Wigs for Kids

A Mentor barbershop has turned an annual fundraiser to help various organizations into a family affair.
A Wigs For Kids fundraiser at Nicki’s Barbershop, located at 9853 Old Johnnycake Ridge Road, raised $500 with the added donation from the barbershop for the event which took place in late November.
This is the second annual fundraiser and this time they chose Wigs for Kids, a non-profit organization that helps children with hair loss due to chemotherapy, radiation therapy, alopecia and other medical reasons.
Last year they did a fundraiser for the Veterans of Foreign Wars located in Mentor.
Johnny Huszczo is the owner of the barbershop and he was helped out by his granddaughters. Eight-year old Carys, and 6-year-old twins Fina and Alice Campbell were the main attraction and helped raise most of the money from customers.
They made balloon animals, their specialty being wiener dogs and swords. Fresh-popped popcorn and balloons were also given out.
The generosity of the patrons made this day special, according to the owners.
“It was really great to see my granddaughters being involved with helping other kids,” Huszczo said. “The girls had so much fun making balloons and popcorn it makes me realize how fortunate we are.”
Carys Campbell said she understood the cause and enjoyed they day with her family.
“I had so much fun making balloons and popping popcorn with my sisters, Fina and Alice,” Carys said. “We had a sword fight with one of the customers. Everyone was so nice and put money in our box to help the kids”.
How they were able to raise some funds for Wigs for Kids was not a complicated or expensive endeavor, according to Carrie Huszczo.
“It was just a sign outside, word of mouth, normal customers came in and were very generous,” Carrie said. “We were very surprised. The general consensus is having fun. and it is a really nice way to get the people that walk in to contribute and we want to get on the internet and get the word out.
The organization that will benefit will change year by year but the owners expect this to be an annual event to help the community and people across the area.
