LYNCHBURG, Va. (WAVY) — Phoebus won its fourth-straight state title, defeating Varina 23-6 Saturday in the Class 4 state championship game. It's the Phantoms' 49th-straight win, and it came after they trailed 6-3 in the second quarter. Phoebus got a touchdown with just over three minutes left before halftime to take a 9-6 lead, but it shut out Varina the rest of the way. That score line remained to start the fourth quarter. The Phantoms then began to put some distance between themselves and Varina, as Davion Roberts ran for 26 yards, but fumbled in the end zone, with Markus Hopson recovering the ball in the end zone for the touchdown. With 1:57 left in the game, Maurikus Banks ran for 13 yards and another score, giving Phoebus a 23-6 lead and clinching the program's fourth-straight state title. Check WAVY.com for updates.
