Dec 14, 2024
Parkite Lauren Macuga made history Saturday, finishing fourth in the first-ever Beaver Creek women’s downhill World Cup race. Macuga soared through the finishing gates with a time of 1:32.90, 52 tenths of a second off the winner Cornelia Huetter of Austria. The downhill race was the first of the women’s speed World Cup season. Beaver Creek is also hosting a super-G race tomorrow, where Macuga looks to be a top contender again. The other podium finishers Saturday were Sofia Goggia of Italy and Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland. Skiing legend Lindsey Vonn opened up the action to cheers and cowbells Saturday, forerunning the course. Vonn announced her return to the Cup stage Friday morning, as she’ll race the next speed tour stop next weekend in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Vonn shared a special moment with Macuga after Macuga’s run, embracing her, with Macuga overjoyed. “Thank you,” Macuga told Vonn while sharing the hug. “I’m fired up.”“Fuck yeah,” replied Vonn, giving the elated Macuga a loving shake and push on the shoulder. To track Macuga and the rest of the field’s super-G results tomorrow, see the FIS’ Beaver Creek page. For more information on where to watch the race, see the U.S. Ski Team’s website. Macuga is joined on the U.S. teams by her two sisters, Alli, a mogulist, and Sam, a ski jumper.
