NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Several community leaders dedicated their morning to helping families get a head start on the holidays with Christmas shopping and free food.
Christmas toys could be seen covering the parking lot on United Way, as CEO Micheal Williamson and Councilman Oliver Thomas say the Christmas season will always be about giving back so no one is left empty-handed.

"We can show up and do amazing things like this because of the support we get from the community 364 days of the year before we show up in the community. We're just really excited to be able to bring some cheer to families, feel really honored to be here. Do this," said Williamson.
"The greatest gift that God gives us is our ability to share moments like this with others. So. So the United Way is doing here, man. It's not only putting a smile on people's faces, it's putting gifts under trees," said Councilman Thomas.
One mother made her way to the event thankful that so many parents would be able to put presents under the tree for their kids.
"It's wonderful. It's now it's good to know that everyone is able to get a toy for their kids. If their parents are not able to afford toys," said a mother picking up toys for her children.

Just five minutes away Household of Faith Church held their annual mega community outreach with free groceries, clothing, and home goods. Pastor Antoine Barriere explained it's all about brightening the holidays for the community as watching firsthand brings happiness to him.
"It means that we can continue to be the hands of Jesus. That's what we call especially, doing this Christmas season. Joy to the world. We're excited for this hour to help our community. So many people need to say Merry Christmas," said Pastor Barriere.
Sadie Early agrees calling it a blessing.
"It's a beautiful place on a beautiful day. The wind is a little bit high but they have everything. This is my second time here, this is a giving thing from God," said Early.
