Former babysitter sentenced to life plus 40 years for murder, child abuse

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A former Mississippi babysitter has been sentenced to life in prison plus 40 years for the capital murder of a two-year-old.
Makallie Elizabeth Durham of Corinth pled guilty to capital murder and four counts of felonious child abuse on Friday.

The charges stemmed from the September 2022 murder of a two-year-old toddler. The toddler's 11-month-old sibling also sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The injuries to both children were determined to be non-accidental.

Circuit Judge Michael P. Mills Jr. sentenced Durham, 25, to the maximum punishment of life imprisonment in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections for the capital murder charge and an additional 40 years for the child abuse charge.
Durham will not be eligible for parole or any other form of release from incarceration.
