ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WNCN) — The United States Coast Guard rescued three mariners off the coast of the Carolinas Thursday morning.
The three were in a sailing vessel caught in heavy weather 154 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, according to the USCG.
Around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, watchstanders at the Fifth Coast Guard District Command Center were notified by Coast Guard Sector Charleston that a 59-foot sailing vessel named "TIME-AUT" was at risk of capsizing in bad weather.
"The mariners aboard the vessel initially stated that they were not in distress," the USCG said in a release. "However, early Thursday morning the mariners aboard the 'TIME-AUT' requested to abandon their vessel."

The USCG said that request prompted the launch of an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, as well as the Coast Guard Cutter Richard Snyder crew.
Both the Hercules and Jayhawk crews arrived at the location of the vessel around 9:30 a.m., the USCG said, with the Jayhawk crew hoisting all three mariners from the TIME-AUT around 10 a.m.
According to the USCG, the weather on scene was reported to include winds of 17 to 23 miles per hour with seas of six to 10 feet.
No injuries were reported.
The TIME-AUT was equipped with life jackets, life rafts, an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon and Starlink communications, the USCG said.
