It is a cold start to the weekend, but warmer compared to what we have experienced over the past few days. Make sure you still bundle up as you're heading out for any plans, including wrapping up your Christmas shopping. We are tracking two weather systems to bring widespread rain to the area in the coming days. The first of these systems will move in this evening. There is a concern though for a brief period of freezing rain in more northern communities tonight as rain moves in. Where this potential is the highest, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued from 8 PM Saturday to 4 AM Sunday for Steuben and Williams Counties in our area. Freezing rain is possible tonight in north-northeast areas. Temperatures look to be just cold enough in these areas for the rain to freeze on contact with the surface. Light ice accumulations are possible, which will cause travel headaches in areas that do experience the freezing rain. Remember, it only takes a glaze of ice to cause roads to become very slick, especially on bridges. Temperatures will warm enough overnight that any areas of freezing rain will become all rain as the night goes on. The rain will be heavy in some areas and it will be windy. Overnight lows will fall as low as the low-to-mid 30s, but temperatures will rise as a result of this system dragging warmer air northward. Temperatures will climb into the 40s on Sunday as our first weather system gradually exits. Look for morning rain showers to give way to a mainly cloudy afternoon. Weather system number two then arrives early Monday morning and we'll see more periods of rain throughout the day. High temperatures will soar into the 50s as this system moves in. By the time all is said and done from both weather systems, we're looking at a much-needed soaking rainfall. We're likely to see amounts generally between one and two inches of rain, with southern areas more likely to experience the higher totals. After this wet start to the week, a cold front passes through, cooling us back down steadily through the workweek, with 30s for highs by Thursday. We then look to drop back down into the 20s by next weekend. Tonight: Cloudy with periods of rain. Areas of freezing rain early in our far northern communities.
