More than 30 children removed from their homes wait for the Wishmas Tree
Dec 14, 2024
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Each year foster children at Kern Bridges Youth Homes create their own Christmas wish list of ten items.
Some want to smell good and wish for cologne. Others wish they had new shoes, but what every foster child wishes for most is to be with mommy and daddy every single day.
"Research has shown that even if their home may not look perfect, being with moms and dads is truly where they wanna be," said Alexandria Stevenson with Kern Bridges Youth Homes.
Stevenson says there are more than 30 kids in 2024 who were removed from their homes. Kern Bridges works to reunite them, but until they do you can help them feel at home by granting their wishes on the Wishmas Tree.
Some wishes are exciting, but some hurt the heart.
"A boy asked for a PS5, which I didn't even know they had PS5s this year," said Stevenson.
Lino Casas, manager at Lorene's Coffee Shop said, "There's some that are just innocent as can be and they just want Hot Wheels. You know, a blanket, a hoodie...clothing."
More than 20 vendors proudly display the trees and transfer the wishes onto a Magical Wishmas ornament. Businesses just like Lorene's Coffee Shop.
Casas says his loyal customers have the biggest hearts in Bakersfield. One even bought a child an indoor trampoline.
"They're so grateful that they're able to help somebody out because that's what it's about," said Casas. "That's what Christmas is about."
Visit any vendor or stop by KGET studios to pick up a Wishmas ornament so you can give the gift of joy to one of these special foster children.
Drop off your unwrapped gift at any of our locations before December 20th because every child deserves a good Christmas.
"Our community has been amazing in making sure every Wishmas has been filled," said Stevenson.
