The Nets have agreed to trade veteran guard Dennis Schröder and one second-round pick to the Golden State Warriors in exchange for De’Anthony Melton and three second-round picks, league sources confirmed to the Daily News. The exact picks that will be shipped out by each team are still being finalized. Brooklyn and Golden State reportedly opened “exploratory conversations” regarding a potential deal earlier in the week. Schröder finished with a game-high 31 points in a 128-120 defeat of the Warriors at Chase Center on Nov. 25. Schröder, who was acquired by the Nets at last season’s trade deadline, has been playing the best basketball of his career since arriving in Brooklyn. The 31-year-old has averaged 18.4 points and 6.6 assists across 23 games this season while shooting 45.2% from the field and 38.7% from 3-point range. Schröder is one of seven guards who have averaged at least 18 points and five assists while shooting at least 45% from the field, 35% from deep and 85% from the free throw line. Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Darius Garland, Brandon Ingram, Tyler Herro, and his new teammate Stephen Curry are the others. Melton, who entered the season on a one-year deal, averaged 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists across six games before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in November. In Schröder, the Warriors get a dynamic guard who can help fill that void. Golden State, hoping to extend Curry’s championship window with the Schröder trade, is ranked No. 5 in the Western Conference at 14-10 entering Saturday’s games. Brooklyn, the No. 10 team in the Eastern Conference entering Saturday’s games, has exceeded expectations in Year 1 under head coach Jordi Fernandez. However, they were expected to tank for higher draft position entering the season, and their surprising start has not assisted that effort. They would hold the No. 9, No. 17 (via Bucks), No. 23 (via Knicks) and No. 26 picks in the first round if the season ended today, according to Tankathon. The Nets were 13.9 points better per 100 possessions with Schröder on the floor, the fourth-highest mark among NBA point guards, according to CleaningTheGlass, so losing him will obviously be a massive blow to the team’s production at both ends of the court. Melton’s expiring salary will assist financial flexibility going forward.
