FORECAST: Partly sunny and cold Saturday
Dec 14, 2024
Happy Saturday, DMV! It will be another cold day across the entire DMV. A strong high pressure centered over the New England coast will keep us quiet as we head through Saturday. If you plan on heading to the Army vs. Navy game this afternoon make sure to bundle up. By the start of the game, temperatures are expected to be in the lower 40s and dip into the 30s by the time the game ends. Highs today will be below average for this time of year reaching into the 40s.
By tonight, clouds will begin to build into the area but the DMV will stay dry. Lows tonight will once again drop into the 20s to 30s. A storm system from the west will begin to approach the DMV overnight tonight and move in by Sunday. This system could make things messy on Sunday as it interacts with lingering cold air that will be shoved up against the mountains from the strong ridge to our northeast. A wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will be likely across our western counties, which has led to a Winter Storm Watch being issued for Garrett, western Allegany, and western Mineral Counties.
Light precipitation can begin to fall as early as tomorrow morning mainly west of the Blue Ridge mountains. But the bulk of the shower activity will arrive in the afternoon to evening time in the Nation's Capital. Drier air from the high pressure off of the New England coast will affect how heavy the mix of precipitation will be at times. Closer to the Beltway expect a cold rain to fall as temperatures will reach above the freezing mark. A few inches of snow/sleet accumulation and a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation will be possible in locations along and west of I-81.
A few morning showers will be possible as we head through the Monday morning. But we will start to see a break in the rain before our next system will move through late Monday night into Tuesday providing us with more rain. Heading into the next work week looks a bit interesting as multiple disturbances look to pass through the area providing us with soggy conditions.
