GREG JOHNSON: Giants are historic underdogs vs. Ravens with laughable number of injuries
Dec 14, 2024
It’s no understatement to say that if the 2-11 Giants were to beat the 8-5 Ravens on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, it would be one of the greatest upsets in NFL history.
The Giants are whopping 16-point underdogs — the largest point spread of any NFL game this season and the largest for the Giants in a home game since at least 1966, according to ESPN.
That’s how bad state of affairs have become in the Meadowlands. Vegas isn’t expecting this team to put up enough of a fight to even be within two touchdowns in its own building, and how can you blame the bookmakers?
The Giants average the fewest points per game (14.9); the Ravens average the third-most (29.5). The Giants won’t have as many as nine of their opening day starters because of injuries and the release of quarterback Daniel Jones three weeks ago; the Ravens are coming off a bye week and have not yet ruled out any players for this game.
“All we can do is go out there and control what we control and go out there and perform a good game on Sunday,” head coach Brian Daboll said Friday when asked about being a 16-point underdog.
That is a seemingly impossible task with the laughable number of injuries facing this team.
The Giants had 19 players on their injury report this week compared to six for the Ravens. Among the 30 other NFL teams (bye weeks are over), only the Buccaneers had more players listed on their injury report (20).
A game like this was always going to be one of the toughest games on the schedule for a bad team. But when the Giants are without their most indispensable player on offense (left tackle Andrew Thomas) and defense (nose tackle Dexter Lawrence), plus two other starting offensive linemen, their best linebacker and potentially their top-three cornerbacks?
Forget about it.
The NFL has always been known for its “any given Sunday” parity, but there is simply no logical world in which this Giants roster hangs with two-time MVP Lamar Jackson. If there was any time for a team to forfeit a game, this would be it.
But alas, the show must go on and the pitiful Giants are contractually obligated to play four more games including this one. They are down to two chances to avoid going winless at home for the first time since 1974, which would serve as the ultimate embarrassment for owners John Mara and Steve Tisch in the franchise’s 100th season.
Perhaps that would serve the organization better in the long run, though. The Giants currently hold the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, although Tankathon has them No. 2 behind the Raiders when estimating strength of schedule for all 17 games.
In any event, the Giants’ draft position could still swing several spots. The Patriots, Panthers, Jaguars, Titans, Jets and Browns are all 3-10 and should end up with weaker strength of schedules than the Giants, so any game that the Giants win from here on out could move them behind any of those teams.
The last thing the Giants need is to miss a chance at drafting Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders or Miami’s Cam Ward.
While this is considered a generally weaker quarterback class than last year, those two are by far the best prospects available. And even if the Giants sign a veteran “bridge” quarterback for next season, as they should either way, they need hope that the future franchise quarterback is in the building.
They can’t bank on being terrible enough again to draft Arch Manning first overall in 2026, much less afford to do so without facing an all-out riot from a fanbase that has experienced double-digit losses in nine of the last 11 seasons. And this team is three losses away from setting the franchise record for futility.
Oh, did I mention that there is a game on Sunday?
Giants Gameday
The Game: Ravens (8-5) at Giants (2-11), MetLife Stadium, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (FOX)
The Line: Baltimore by 16
History: The Ravens lead the all-time series, 8-5, but the Giants won the most recent matchup in East Rutherford in 2022. Baltimore defeated New York in Super Bowl XXXV.
Key Matchups:
Giants WR Malik Nabers vs. Ravens CB Brandon Stephens: It’s hard to see the Giants winning a home game without a big performance from their rookie star. They made him a bigger priority last week against the Saints as Nabers had his most receiving yards in a game (79) since late September. Stephens, a 2021 third-round pick, is part of a Baltimore secondary which is allowing the seventh-most yards per pass attempt (7.0).
Giants RG Jake Kubas vs. Ravens DT Nnamdi Madubuike: When injuries thrust Kubas into the lineup last week, the rookie had a rude awakening with a penalty and a missed block on field-goal attempts that cost the Giants six points. He’ll likely have a tough time with Baltimore’s interior. Madubuike has 28 tackles, five sacks and one forced fumble.
Giants CB Deonte Banks vs. Ravens WR Zay Flowers: Banks has a chance to be back in the lineup after being a limited participant in practice during the week with an injury. Flowers ranks 11th in the NFL with 863 receiving yards, and Banks has mostly struggled while facing six of the receivers in the top seven this season.
Giants run defense vs. Ravens RB Derrick Henry: This might be the biggest mismatch on the field. Henry is second in the NFL with 1,407 rushing yards, and the Giants are allowing the third-most yards per rush attempt (4.9).
Injury Report:
Giants: OUT: DL Rakeem Nunez-Roches (neck/shoulder), ILB Bobby Okereke (back), CB Dru Phillips (shoulder), G Jon Runyan Jr. (ankle); DOUBTFUL: QB Drew Lock (heel/left elbow), CB Cor’Dale Flott (quad); QUESTIONABLE: CB Deonte Banks (rib), OT Chris Hubbard (knee), OL Austin Schlottmann (fibula), ILB Dyontae Johnson (ankle).
Ravens: QUESTIONABLE: OLB Adisa Isaac (hamstring), S Sanoussi Kane (hamstring), NT Michael Pierce (calf), CB T.J. Tampa (ankle).
Giant Facts: The Giants’ 41.67% percent touchdown rate in the red zone is the worst in the NFL, nearly 3% lower than the next closest team (Cowboys). … Opponents have attempted only 28.6 passes per game against the Giants, second-fewest in the NFL, but have the 19th-most yards per pass attempt (6.8). … The Giants’ 20 total touchdowns are two fewer than the second-worst team (Patriots).
The Prediction: Ravens 34, Giants 10
