From down 17, to a 30-11 run. Oh, also without three rotation players and three quarters of CP3. Coming off a win versus the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, the Spurs had a week-long break until their matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Spurs were without Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, and Tre Jones due to injury, but did not seem to waver, at first. The Spurs had a successful first quarter leading 33-25. However, Chris Paul received one of the quicker ejections you’ll ever see. The Spurs now had to rely on Blake Wesley and Malaki Branham to play point guard. They closed the first half leading 52-42, but what came next would be a rude awakening.
The Blazers outscored the Spurs 46-28 in the third led by Jerami Grant who dropped 22 in the quarter alone. Early in the fourth, the Spurs found themselves down by 17 points. However, they showed tremendous resilience by hustling on loose balls, forcing turnovers, and cashing in points to tie the game with over two minutes remaining. The teams traded clutch shot after clutch shot until 6.4 seconds remaining. Victor Wembanyama caught the inbounds pass at the free throw line and was fouled by Grant with 2.1 on the clock. Wemby nailed both free throws and Deni Advija missed a half-court shot at the buzzer. The Spurs escaped with a win on a 30-11 run, and the final score was 118-116.
Victor Wembanyama led the way with 28 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two blocks, and a steal. He continues to amaze Spurs fans with new and unique ways to score, and is still only 20.

After going into the game shorthanded, the CP3 ejection only just added another source of fuel to the chaos for this team. Even after giving up 46 in the third and falling behind by 17 in the fourth, this team showed the mental fortitude not to give up. Scratching and clawing their way back, this team showed fight. Great comeback, but now this team faces a quick turnaround versus the T-Wolves.
Finally, here are the full game highlights.
The Spurs take on the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Frost Bank Center on Sunday at 6:00 P.M. (CST) on FDSN-SW.
