The Wisconsin volleyball team will play for the right to go to the Final Four. The second-seeded Badgers outlasted sixth-seeded Texas A&M on Friday night for a five-set win (25-21, 18-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13) to advance to the Elite Eight. “Hot damn, this tournament has been something else,” Wisconsin coach Kelly Sheffield said. “The battles, the competitiveness seemingly every single match. The number of five-setters that have already happened, barely halfway through, it’s unbelievable. I think everyone that watched that match was in for a treat and was treated to something special.” It was definitely a battle as the teams traded shot after shot through the first three sets. Then it ratcheted up a notch in the final two sets. It was 22-22 in the fourth when the Aggies got back-to-back kills from Logan Lednicky. After a Wisconsin point, Lednicky ended the set with another kill. In the fifth, things were tied 6-6 before the Badgers ran off five straight points helped in part by a pair of kills from Julia Orzol. But Texas A&M wouldn’t go away, going on a 4-0 run to pull within 13-12. The Badgers had an answer and got it from two of their best players, as Carter Booth got a kill to stop the Aggies’ run and then Sarah Franklin finished it off with a kill of her own. Franklin led the way for Wisconsin with a team-high 21 kills, while Booth finished with 14 kills and nine blocks. Anna Smrek had 10 kills and nine blocks. Charlie Fuerbringer had 56 assists and 12 digs. Lola Schumacher had 24 digs. The Badgers will now face Big Ten rival Nebraska on Sunday as they look to get to the program’s seventh Final Four and fifth since 2019. The Cornhuskers swept Wisconsin this season, winning both matches 3-0.
