Fairport, N.Y. (WROC) — Not as many barks as there used to be when you enter Pet World in Fairport. That's because they've sold all but three of their dogs knowing the state's new puppy mill bill takes effect Saturday. After that, pet stores will no longer be allowed to sell rabbits, cats and dogs. Pet World manager, Mary Pat Feeney, says she's confident the remaining dogs will find good homes. “We've had two go home in the last two days,” Feeney said. “We have a poodle, cavapoo and Havanese, all males and we're hoping by tomorrow night they'll have homes. We have a few people looking at this point.” Should someone have to return a dog, Pet World would not be able to hold the dog in the story, but Feeney says they'd come up with a solution. “We'll work through it and the store will definitely still be here. We don't sell a lot of dogs, but we're ramping up the fish business and plants and things like that so we'll definitely be still be here,” Feeney said. Some pet stories, though, are closing up shop in the face of the new law, the intent of which is to undercut operations from breeding unhealthy dogs in poor conditions. Feeney, however, says there will be a drawback. “They're forcing people to go to the internet to look for breeders. People are going to have to do their own research whether the breeders are good and honest,” she said. Should a pet store not be able to find a home for a dog, they must drop it off at a sanctuary or rescue.
