FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Shaver Lake is expecting a blanket of snow this weekend, which means Caltrans workers will take on 24-hour shifts to clear the roads. For locals like Jim Dixon, snow is business as usual. “You trip on it. That’s about it,” Dixon said. He’s lived there for 54 years, so he says a few inches of snow is no big deal. “You make sure your pipes are protected and then you've always got a generator to back you up and then, you know, to make sure you have water and firewood and that about takes care of it,” Dixon said. That snow can attract swarms of tourists, though, so Caltrans takes it seriously. Caltrans spokesperson Larry Johnson says crews will work around the clock to make sure roads are clear for locals and travelers. “When the storm does hit, they're going to be out there a lot on the roads, sanding the roads, keeping the roads safe for everybody,” Johnson said. He says they will also help people who get stuck in the ice, but there are things people can do to avoid that fate. Johnson recommends visitors check their tire’s air pressure, drive slowly, bring water and carry chains at all times. “It is a requirement to carry chains in your car. So you might not need them, but if the conditions deteriorate and you need them and CHP says you have to put them on, you have to have them,” Johnson said. If a diver has to stop to put chains on, he says it’s important to make sure they are not in a dangerous location. Dixon says he sees a lot of people make that mistake. “A lot of people stop in the middle of the road, open their doors to put their chains on, and have no flashers or warnings or anything else. And then you come around the corner and you could be in trouble,” Dixon said. He says Caltrans does a good job of keeping people safe, though, so he’s not worried.
