BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The most recent death on Bakersfield's streets happened Tuesday night when a man fell off his bike and was struck by a vehicle. The fatal crash happened on Airport Drive and Washington Avenue, just across the street from North Beardsley Park at 7:30 p.m. The victim was identified by the family as 38-year-old Brent Evans. "It's one of the hardest things a parent has to do is bury their child," Evans' mother, Linda Allen, said. "You can't ever bring him home." Man dies after RV rolls over him: Bakersfield PD Allen along with siblings and friends of Evans, drove 16 hours from Wyoming to see what happened. Evans called his mom right before the accident, "He said 'Mom I'm hungry.' Told me he was hungry and that he loved me. And I asked him 'How you doing son?' and he said 'Oh, I'm OK.'" Allen said his last words to her were: "He says 'Mom I love you.' He goes, 'I love you mama.' He goes 'I'll call you later,' and that was an hour before I got the phone call that he had been hit." California Highway Patrol officials said Evans was riding a bike outside of a crosswalk and fell off, and an oncoming car hit him. Three people have been hit and killed on Airport Drive this year, in fact this isn't the only case on this specific area of airport. In June, Austin Allison was crossing the street just feet from where Evans was hit. Allison was hit by a car around 2:30 a.m. The driver of that car did not stay on scene and 17 News has asked the California Highway Patrol about the search for the driver and vehicle. A friend of Evans, Eric Lancaster, lived in the Oildale area for 30 years. "This isn't the first person we've lost here, and at this rate it's not going to be the last." Close Thanks for signing up! "Poor is understated [...] You can look a quarter mile in either direction and there is no lighting for nobody," he said. CHP Sgt. Craig Reynolds responded to the scene Tuesday night and said that this area is poorly lit. "If you're crossing the street make sure you're watching out for traffic, especially if you're wearing dark clothing," Reynolds said. "Street lighting out here is not very great." The family is holding a candlelight vigil for Brent on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at the scene of the collision. They also set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral and burial costs.
