FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) – Christmas is less than two weeks away and families are out at Christmas tree farms across the DMV searching for the perfect tree to take home. DC News Now spoke with the owner of Dreamland Christmas Tree Farm to see how business is going so far this holiday season. Young girl holds 6th annual toy drive in Montgomery County Riesett said sales have been steady since they first opened on Nov. 23. “We are right on par with last year,” Riesett said. “The first weekend, the weekend before Thanksgiving, was much busier than last year, double the trees actually. Then, Thanksgiving was similar, and then the weekend after Thanksgiving was similar to last year.” Families buying trees early has been a nationwide trend. According to a survey by the Real Christmas Tree Board, 33% of Americans picked up their Christmas tree the week after Thanksgiving, and another 33% purchased theirs the first week of December. Riesett said the toughest test of the holiday season is just getting underway. “This is going to be the make-or-break weekend for us because there is nothing to compare it to,” he said. “If we compare it to the third weekend after Thanksgiving last year, it’s going to be busy. If we compare it to the second weekend before Christmas last year, it’s going to be slow, and unfortunately, this weekend is both. It’s the third weekend after Thanksgiving; it’s the second weekend before Christmas. So, we’ll see what it brings.” Boaters prepare for Alexandria’s ‘Holiday Boat Parade of Lights’ Pricing is a big factor when it comes to selling trees. Riesett said unlike some farms that had to raise their prices, he’s actually lowered his slightly, and customers are appreciative. “I was pleasantly surprised,” customer Chrissy Barry said. “It’s very reasonable and even inside, the hot cocoa and the cookies and the gifts that they offer for sale, everything is extremely reasonable. I didn’t feel overwhelmed when I came in. You know, sometimes it’s difficult this time of year to find the extra money to spend.” The National Christmas Tree Association said people looking to purchase a real Christmas tree this year can expect to spend anywhere from $80 to more than $100.
