Wet weather on the way this weekend
Dec 13, 2024
It was a quiet finish to the week weather-wise across Central and Eastern Kentucky with some filtered sunshine and moderating temperatures. After a chilly start with readings in the mid to upper 20s, afternoon highs managed to sneak back into the mid-40s with a light east wind in place which is right where we should be temperature-wise for the middle part of December. Hopefully you enjoyed the dry Friday as an active and unsettled weather pattern will really kick in this weekend and beyond.
The first in a series of storm systems will make a run into the Ohio Valley on Saturday so expect our rain chances to ramp up as the day wears on. If you’ve got Christmas shopping and the like to take care of the first half of the day will be your best window as the wet weather will move in late day/early evening with a fairly steady rain expected from that point forward. Afternoon highs should reach the low 50s so everything will easily be in the liquid form. Just plan on needing the umbrella if you have any plans on Saturday evening.
The damp and dreary conditions will continue into Sunday with more wet weather expected. Most locations could pick up around 1″ plus rainfall totals from this initial system and we won’t be done yet heading into early next week. Another fast moving system will be right on the heels of the early weekend front so another round of steady rain is forecast to impact the area on Monday. The one positive is that temperatures will continue to be above average with afternoon highs urging into the upper 50s to begin the week despite the clouds and rain around. A few isolated rumbles of thunder can’t be ruled out and additional rainfall totals could add another half inch to 1″ to the mix so it will definitely be a wet period here in the Bluegrass.
The steady rain should taper off into Tuesday but a third system looks to impact the region into the mid-week as a wave of low pressure slides by to our south. Even with the majority of the moisture potentially staying south we are still looking at some additional rain chances across the area. Temperatures will drop back closer to average into the mid to upper 40s and there is some hint from the model data that even colder air could return late next week. This combined with the potential for a mid-level wave to move in could result in a return of snow showers but we are still a week out and the data isn’t really synced up with timing and placement so we’ll keep an eye on it in the coming days.
