GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - The Green Bay Metro Fire Department is grieving the loss of engineer and paramedic Tyler Kreiter, who died on Dec. 12, 2024, at the age of 43 after a long battle with cancer.
Tyler dedicated 17 years of service to the department and the Green Bay community. He was known for his commitment, compassion, and selflessness.

Tyler’s passing has left a deep void in both his family and the fire department. Fire Chief Matthew Knott reflected on Tyler’s dedication, even as he battled cancer.
“As Tyler struggled with cancer over the last three years, I do not remember a single day that he complained or thought of anything else besides his service and how he could do better for our community,” Knott said.
Tyler’s death serves as a somber reminder of the dangers firefighters face every day. Chief Knott highlighted the high cancer rates among firefighters, which are at an all-time high. “Firefighters are 14 times more likely to die from cancer than the general public,” he mentioned.
Tyler leaves behind a wife, three children, and colleagues who considered him a friend and brother. The Green Bay Metro Fire Department is offering support to Tyler’s family as they cope with this devastating loss.
“The entire department is sticking behind the family at this time, and our full attention is focused on meeting their needs,” Chief Knott said.
The Kreiter family has received an outpouring of support from colleagues and friends across the country. “Tyler was a great father, husband, firefighter, and friend, and he will be missed,” Chief Knott said. “We’d like to thank all of our colleagues and friends from across the country who have reached out during these difficult times.”
Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich also paid tribute to Tyler’s life and service. “Tyler was an incredible member of the Green Bay Fire Department, well-respected by all of his colleagues, a hero to them, a hero to his family, a hero to the city of Green Bay,” Genrich said.
The mayor also emphasized the lasting legacy Tyler leaves behind. “But Tyler left an incredible legacy for us all to cherish and appreciate, and so that’s something that all his colleagues, friends, and family members will be able to carry with them,” he added.
