EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Animal Services is reminding the community about the responsibilities of pet ownership as the holiday season approaches, the City said in a press release on Friday, Dec. 13. "While the idea of gifting a furry friend may seem heartwarming, it’s important to remember that pets are not just presents—they are lifelong members of the family," the City said. The City says the vision of a playful puppy or a kitten under the Christmas tree can warm hearts, but the reality of caring for a pet requires time, resources, and dedication. Gifting a pet as a surprise gift can sometimes lead to stress for both the owner and the animal. Involving future pet owners in the adoption process can ensure that a pet is truly wanted and the pet owners are ready for a life-long commitment, the City said. Those who are not ready for the commitment of a pet can also consider fostering. The City says fostering is free and gives a homeless pet a temporary home during the holiday season. "It’s a wonderful way to experience the joys of pet companionship without the long-term obligation, and it also gives potential pet owners a chance to determine if having a pet fits their lifestyle. Fostering is a meaningful act of kindness that can truly make a difference in the lives of animals in need," the City said. If a pet is on someone's holiday list, they should consider giving a gift certificate to a local shelter, rescue, or pet store. "This allows the recipient to make an informed decision, choose the pet that’s right for them, and prepare for their new companion’s arrival in a way that’s thoughtful and responsible," the City said.
