The City of Williston wrote in a news release that Chief Peterson's placement on administrative leave is a standard procedural step and does not imply wrongdoing on his part.
Peterson has been Chief of Police for more than seven years, after replacing former Police Chief James Lokken, who retired in April 2017.

During this time, Captain Steve Gutknecht will serve as Interim Chief of Police. The City of Williston says all staff within the department have been told to stay focused on serving the community and to report to their immediate supervisors as usual.
The City asked for the public’s patience and understanding, and said they will conduct the investigation according to "standard investigation procedures."
KX News has reached out to Petersen, Mayor Howard Klug, and City Administrator Shawn Wenko for comment. We have not yet heard back from them.
