BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- "Good morning, Bakersfield I'm Alex Fisher." You might think my job as a news anchor would make it easy for me to play a TV show host in a musical. But there's a difference between broadcast news and Broadway musicals. ‘War of the Rohirrim’ animated prequel to ‘Rings’ trilogy Alex Fisher: "When you approached me with this idea of me being Corny Collins and I pushed back on it for quite some time, what did you see in me without knowing if I could dance, act or sing?" Amy Adams: "I knew that, if you were willing, I could train you, I knew the subtleties of your voice because I listened to how you use your voice and you already do the active manipulation and I could teach you how to do it as the character." You may remember Adams as one of the finalists on American Idol in 2004. She's back in Bakersfield and coached me to help find my voice. For three months, Amy worked with me to embrace the role of Corny Collins in Hairspray. I quickly found out, it's not an easy role -- combining high energy with high notes. But with a cast of more than 30 people singing and dancing, at my side, my time in the limelight was both exhausting and exhilarating. Alex: "I look at the rest of this cast and I'm in awe of everyone...they're just incredible. But I know they had to get a start somewhere. So what do you tell people if they look at all of this -- this whole production -- and go 'oh, I could never do anything like this." Never miss a story: Make KGET.com your homepage Adams: "Yeah, the answer is, yeah you can.' It's work, you have to enjoy the work. If you don't enjoy the work, you won't enjoy the process." While I wait in the wings with butterflies in my stomach each night, when the curtain goes up, Corny Collins saunters on stage. Because the show must go on. You can catch Hairspray at the Stars Theatre until Dec. 22nd. Get your tickets here. Watch an additional interview with some of the cast members of Hairspray in the video player above.
