Westlake Police Department is asking the public for information regarding the theft Dec. 9 of an ATM machine from BP gasoline station.
Just after 3 a.m., Westlake police received notification of an alarm activation at BP, located at Columbia and Detroit roads, according to a news release from Westlake police Capt. Gerald Vogel.
Officers arrived and found the front door to the convenience store smashed in and an unoccupied Chrysler Town and Country van parked nearby in the lot.
The back area of the van was damaged and police believe it was used to break through the front doors and dislodge the interior ATM machine, the release stated.
No one was at the gas station when the officers arrived.
The preliminary investigation revealed that four people with gloves and masks arrived in two stolen Town and Country vans minutes before 3 a.m.
The thieves used one van to break into the business and loaded the ATM into the other vehicle and fled onto Interstate 90, the release stated.
“The entire theft took less than a minute,” Fogel stated in the release.
Both vans were reported stolen in Cleveland.
The “get-away vehicle” was recovered later in the day on East 91st Street in Cleveland, the release stated.
The investigation remains ongoing and the public is encouraged to contact Westlake police at 440-871-3311 with any information about the break in and theft of the ATM.
Tipsters may remain anonymous.
