The Ohio House of Representatives voted to concur with the Ohio Senate this week on Substitute House Bill 81, an omnibus package of road naming, including HB 350 dedicating State Route 44 between Prouty Road and Mentor Avenue the “Lance Corporal Austin B. Schwenk Memorial Highway.”
Originally passed unanimously by the House Transportation Committee, HB 350 was amended into HB 81 and unanimously passed by the House, according to a news release.
Schwenk was killed in October 2023 at Camp Lejeune, where he served as a 2171, electro-optical ordinance repairer with the 2nd battalion, 6th Marine division. Schwenk graduated from Riverside High School in 2022 and is remembered as an avid athlete, lover of cars, and someone who always dreamed of joining the United States Marine Corps, according to the release.
“I am pleased that the General Assembly supported this effort by Rep. (Jamie) Callender and myself to honor the memory of Lance Corporal Schwenk for his service to our nation so tragically cut short,” said Rep. Daniel P. Troy, D-Willowick, in the release.
“Our nation has a long history of honoring those who step up to serve our county,” continued Callender. “The dedication of State Route 44 in memory of LCpl Schwenk will be an enduring reminder of his patriotism, courage, and commitment.”
HB 81 now awaits the governor’s signature.
