WAYLAND, N.Y. (WROC) -- A Naples high schooler setting records across the Empire State and beyond in youth sport shooting. Andrew Goodwin carefully and methodically loads, shoots, and reloads again—shattering target after target out of the air with the winning aim he's honed since he first tried competitive trap shooting five years ago. "The biggest moment was during the first shoot off—the first shoot off I ever won—that’s where after you win that shoot off, your nerves come back down and then the next shoot off, you’re ready. You’re like I’m ready to take him on," Andrew explains to News 8's Mikhaela Singleton. Andrew has more than a dozen titles with the top average shooting scores at state and regional competitions. His most recent accomplishment was taking both top male average and top overall average during the New York State High School Clay Target League’s 2024 Fall Trap Season. Andrew regularly practices at the Springwater Rod & Gun Club and even manages to out shoot the adults during club championships. "Staying focused," Andrew says when asked what helps him the most to win. "It’s all up here. I mean, it’s 80 percent mental, 20 percent gun mounts and stuff. Once you have it up here and you know exactly what you’ve got to do, then you’ll be all set." Andrew already taking a mentorship role to his peers in trap shooting, with a plan to continue in college and see how far his sights can lead him. "I’m proud of myself but many others as well. I’m proud to help people that need a hand and guide the youth shooting sports along," Andrew says.
