When to see king tides in San Diego this December
Dec 13, 2024
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Another king tide event is expected along San Diego’s coastline this month.
In fact, the tidal event is set to return this weekend amid the last full moon of 2025, also known as the Cold Moon -- fitting for the holiday season. The moon will appear full for about three days, from Friday evening through Monday morning, though Sunday is when it will actually be full.
A full moon occurs when the Earth, moon and sun are near alignment, and king tides are a result of this positioning. This alignment causes an increase in the gravitational pull called spring tides.
King tides occur when these spring tides occur at the same time as a perigee, or when the moon is in its closest position to Earth. This only happens about three or four times a year. This means there will be high-than-normal and lower-than-normal tides Friday, Saturday ad Sunday.
It's suggested to use precaution along the shoreline during these times as the tides will be fierce. King tides could sweep the Southern California seaboard with heights up to 7 feet — possibly more.
