SCOUTING RIDER: The Broncs have dropped four straight, the last two of which were MAAC games which puts them in a hole they’ll have to dig out of in the new year. But, first, three non-league games to close out December that they can use to try and get themselves on the right track. That starts with simply getting off this losing streak against an opponent they should beat at home (although they are 0-3 inside Alumni Gymnasium, with all four victories coming on the road). Three-point shooting, or lack thereof has been a forever problem at Rider. The Broncs are, once again, among the worst 3-point shooting teams in percentage and makes per game, ranking 331st at 28.1% and 346th at five made 3s per contest. Add in that they’ve struggled from the free throw line — 292nd at 66.8% — and there are far too many points being left on the floor. Coach Kevin Baggett shook up the starting lineup last time out by inserting Zion Cruz and Flash Burton, so let’s see if he stick with that or goes for another combination. Cruz had 15 points in his first start. Tariq Ingraham has posted three straight double-doubles, averaging 14.6 points and 11.6 rebounds in that stretch.
SCOUTING STONY BROOK: The Seawolves won 20 games last season en route to a surprise appearance in the CAA title game, but this year has been a struggle. Geno Ford’s team has lost five in a row, and has only one victory over Division I competition — a 73-72 win over Central Michigan on Nov. 7. Six of their seven losses are by double digits. Stony Brook also doesn’t shoot the 3 well, checking in at even worse 27.3%. It does get 11.7 offensive rebounds per game, and giving up second-chance opportunities has been a problem of late for Rider. Guard Joe Octave is the top scorer at 13.7 points, with guard C.J. Luster III right behind him at 13.4 points and a team-high 40.3% on 3s. Collin O’Connor, another guard, had 13 points last time out against Air Force and was named CAA Rookie of the Week for the second time.
