HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - The sewing and fabric retailer Joann is set to close its Holyoke store next month. In a statement sent to 22News from Joann spokesperson Daria Johnson, the store located at 2267 Northampton Street, in the former KMart plaza, will close its doors on Sunday, January 12th. The company announced it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March. Holyoke’s new middle school retaining former name Joann’s bankruptcy listed more than $2.44 billion in total debts and about $2.26 billion in total assets, citing numbers from October 2023. The company cited a slowdown in discretionary spending overall and during a time when consumers are taking a step back from at-home crafts, at least relative to a boom seen at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. "We continually evaluate our store locations to ensure we are meeting the needs of our customers and our business. JOANN remains committed to serving customers in the area including through our Ludlow store and joann.com.  Additionally, our priority is supporting our Team Members with resources during this time of transition.  We are grateful for the support of our customers in Holyoke and thank them for their patronage over the years." A statement sent to 22News Joann, formerly known as Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, rebranded itself with the shortened “Joann” name for its 75th anniversary. A single store front was opened in 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio selling crafting supplies and fabric. Over the years, they operated over 800 locations across the country, including locations throughout western Massachusetts in Ludlow, Hadley, and Pittsfield.
