Weak cold front still dry weather
Dec 13, 2024
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Winds are set to pick up, but bitterly cold air, with below-freezing temperatures for most, is once again the big weather story this morning as despite the cloudier skies partially trapping yesterday afternoon's warmth from escaping into space, still mostly light winds for now and still dry air are mostly allowing for the radiational cooling process. Very cold air is once again present in the San Luis Valley as air temperatures around zero degrees for a few areas, while most areas are experiencing air temperatures in the teens, 20s, 30s, and low 40s from north-northwest to south-southeast from high to lower elevation generally, although some valley locations are dealing with the seasonably cold, dense air-mass.

With the decks of high-level clouds moving mostly to the east of the region this afternoon with the stronger upper-level west-southwesterly winds, as well as gustier westerly winds, dry-enough air will lead to no precipitation, except for the slight possibility for sporadic few sprinkles, as well as high-elevation flurries. Afternoon temperatures will be above normal to around-normal criteria, cooler in most northern to western areas, but milder elsewhere. From the morning school commute through the afternoon, temperatures will reach into the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and near 60 degrees from northwest to southeast.
Despite a briefly cooler air-mass through early Saturday afternoon from the Four Corners into the East Highlands, generally warmer weather will continue through the weekend as some passing upper-level clouds will continue to be a signal of stronger winds returning each other day for more areas, elevating the fire threat with areas of blowing dust, as well as some blowing snow in the higher elevations.
