Main Street ideas evolve into recommendations for Park City Council
Dec 13, 2024
Feedback from community members who attended open houses to review a plan to transform Park City’s Main Street area was largely supportive, a municipal staff report says.Large boards with information and graphics displayed proposed future investments and improvements designed to preserve the character of Historic Main Street and Old Town. Other goals are to develop infrastructure for better access, improve residents’ quality of life, stabilize workforce and business success and enhance economic vibrancy. The Park City Council is scheduled to consider the committee’s final recommendations at its Dec. 19 meeting.Project professionals and city staff members were available to answer questions and take comments about the Main Street Area Plan at two engagement sessions held Nov. 12 at Miners Hospital. In addition, the 147 participants were invited to provide written feedback about the plan. The wider streets in the proposed Main Street “car-lite” design were especially popular, but feedback on parking was split. Some community members said street parking was important for businesses and others wanted less parking and more walkability. Making Main Street one-way also got mixed responses.A Swede Alley redevelopment, with mixed-use structures and increased vibrancy, received praise for its “thoughtful density and potential economic benefits,” the report says. However, some questioned whether there would be enough visitors to fill proposed hotels there and one said the project would not benefit locals.“Community sentiment encouraged integrating historical architecture into new designs, focusing on maintaining Park City’s charm and character,” the report says. “Overall, residents valued the balanced approach to preserving history while enhancing functionality, contributing to a forward-thinking, livable, and vibrant Main Street.”There was enthusiasm for a proposed design of Miner’s Park. “Yes! Clean bathrooms, rooftop public eating space, kids’ playground, and stage inviting visitors to stay a while,” one person commented.Reactions to a 9th Street Park design were mostly positive, with some mentioning the value of offering play structures for children. Most community members who commented expressed strong support for the new design of the Bob Wells Plaza west of City Hall.“It’s gorgeous!!!!! I love it!! It really helps connect City Hall with the rest of Main Street instead of making it feel like some sort of floating building with which I have no connection,” one person wrote. The Brew Pub Plaza design concept got mixed reviews. Input suggested that improvements at the location could draw more people to upper Main Street. The feedback led to a few updates to the plan that have the support of the Main Street Area Plan Committee, which is made up of community members and business owners. They include adding a roundabout to the intersection of Swede Alley and Main Street, incorporating safer intersection designs into Main Street and eliminating as a recommended option the removal of the post office from its current site on Main Street. The committee expressed unanimous support for nearly all aspects of the final version of the plan, the staff report says. However, the Main Street redesign had the backing of eight of the 10 members, while the other two expressed concern about removing parking spots and the potential negative impacts on businesses during construction. The post Main Street ideas evolve into recommendations for Park City Council appeared first on Park Record.
