SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The Sioux Falls Police Department is reminding people to not leave their cars running and unattended amid increased reports of stolen vehicle overnight.
From midnight to 10:30 a.m. Friday, six vehicles across the city were stolen, all due to people leaving their cars running unsupervised.

"People starting their cars to warm them up and they went outside and they were gone," SFPD spokesperson Sam Clemens said during Friday’s police briefing.
None of the vehicles had been recovered as of 10:30 a.m.
He said that the incidents were scattered around town, in an apartment complex and residential areas, and none of them were in specific parts of Sioux Falls.
Clemens encouraged people to keep a second set of keys on them or use remote start as alternative options.
"Leaving the car running with the keys in it is the worst option,” he said.
Clemens added if a vehicle is left running and unattended, it can be stolen in a matter of seconds. Most cases occur in the mornings when people leave their cars running for 10-15 minutes while getting ready to leave for work, but it can also happen at daycare drop off and gas stations.
Despite the recent uptick, the total number of stolen vehicles is down by almost 250 from last year. So far, 1,200 to 1,300 cars have been stolen in 2024.
