2025 trial date reset for alleged mastermind in Young Dolph murder
Dec 13, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The trial date for the alleged "mastermind" behind Memphis rapper Young Dolph's death has been reset.
Hernandez Govan is headed to trial after rejecting the state’s offer to settle this matter with a guilty plea. His trial date is now scheduled for July 28, 2025.
“[One of the] charges at trial is a conspiracy count. That for him carries up to four years. There is the murder count that carries life in prison. I think you can imagine whatever the guilty plea offer was, it would be less than that sentence but he made his choice," said Paul Hagerman, Assistant District Attorney.
The trial was originally set to start on March 10, 2025, but due to scheduling conflicts, the date was reset and pushed back.
On November 17, 2021, 36-year-old Adolph Thorton Jr., better known as Young Dolph, was gunned down at Makeda’s Cookies on Airways Boulevard near Ketchum in Memphis.
Hernandez Govan is facing charges of First-Degree Murder, Conspiracy, and Attempted First-Degree Murder in connection to the crime.
Since the beginning, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy has argued that Hernandez Govan is the "mastermind" behind Dolph's death. Govan’s Attorney Manay Arora claims the term “mastermind” is far from the truth.
"I just don’t want the DA to keep talking about 'mastermind' and all this craziness. The discovery says what it says and I am just a little disappointed that it’s been aired out. It should be a fair trial and the jury pool shouldn’t be tainted this way," said Arora.
Arora says he will not be asking for a change of venue.
"We trust the folks in Memphis, we will have a good jury selection," he said.
Justin Johnson has already been convicted in the case and sentenced.
During Justin Johnson's trial in September, Cornelius Smith testified that Memphis rapper Yo Gotti’s brother, Anthony “Big Jook” Mims, put a $100,000 hit on Young Dolph. Smith then identified Govan as the person who set up the deal.
Justin was sentenced to life in prison on the First-Degree Murder count and an additional 35 years in prison for Conspiracy to Commit Murder and for Felon in Possession of a Handgun.
Govan is scheduled to be back in court for a report date on February 27, 2025.
