MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Storm Team 2’s Josh Marthers announced Friday his retirement from delivering the Lowcountry’s forecast every morning. “After a lot of thought I've made the biggest decision of my life, and that's to turn off my 2:45 a.m. alarm and put down that clicker that I've been carrying for years,” said Marthers on News 2 Today. Marthers joined the News 2 team in May 2007 and has been there morning after morning to help you plan your day. "It's been nothing but an absolute honor to be allowed into your homes, not just while you're getting ready to head out the door every morning, but a lot of times in the middle of the night with that young man [Rob Fowler] right there beside me when you're trying to figure out if you need to get your family to safety during bad weather," Marthers added. He’s covered many hurricanes that threatened the Lowcountry, and significant events like the 2008 tornado outbreak, back-to-back ice storms in 2014, and the devastating thousand-year flood in October 2015. "It's been an honor my friend, and we have been family. I always tell people, that we spend more time with our family here at Channel 2 sometimes than our real families," said Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler on News 2 Today. Born in Spartanburg, Marthers, attended Mississippi State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of South Carolina. "Josh, you're my brother, we've been through a lot together," said Octavia Mitchell on News 2 Today. "You have been there for me, we've been there for each other, you've been there for the Lowcountry - and to say that I'm going to miss you is truly an understatement." He’s a member of the American Meteorological Association, and his forecasts carry their prestigious Seal of Approval. He won the 2017 Southeast Regional Emmy for Outstanding On-Camera Talent, and Storm Team 2’s coverage of Hurricane Matthew was nominated for an Emmy as well. When he’s off the air, Marthers spends his time giving back to the community. He serves as a special events adviser to the Carolina Children’s Charity and is a past board member of the organization. In addition to his work with the Carolina Children’s Charity, Josh works closely with Camp Happy Days among others. "You're not rid of me just yet! Oh, don't think you're getting away that easy! We still get to hang out together each morning until Christmas Eve when I'll hang up the mic for the last time," said Marthers. What’s next for Josh? He says you’ll have to stay tuned.
