BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- More than a week after convicted killer Cesar Hernandez escaped from California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation custody in Delano, officials are providing some more -- but not much -- information about the ongoing search. Hernandez escaped from corrections officers on Dec. 2. That morning, he was housed at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano and taken to the courthouse on Jefferson Street for a court hearing related to an in-prison offense. At around 10:45 a.m., CDCR officials said Hernandez "evaded staff," jumped from a van and ran off. A bystander captured video of Hernandez making his run from an unidentified officer. Hernandez was out of restraints and in full sprint. Schools in Delano were closed for two days to accommodate the law enforcement search. On Dec. 5, CDCR said Hernandez has likely fled the Delano area and the security risk had subsided. A "be on the lookout" alert has been issued to California law enforcement agencies. On Wednesday, CDCR provided a statement and said Hernandez was in leg and waist restraints "prior to departing [Kern Valley State Prison] for a scheduled court appearance." Officials did not elaborate further in their statement. CDCR's protocol includes inmates be positively identified, searched and appropriately dressed. The statement also said transport vehicles are to be searched daily. On his radio show, Ralph Bailey, said a source said Hernandez used a makeshift key to break free from those restraints. Hernandez then, reportedly, punched a guard before running through an open gate of the parking lot of the courthouse. Inmate Cesar Hernandez used self-made key to escape CDCR custody: report CDCR officials have not provided any other details of the escape and haven't commented whether or not it was a planned escape. "The incident remains under investigation," CDCR said in a statement Wednesday. It is unlikely CDCR will provide further comment on the investigation. "In the instance of escape, CDCR must strike a careful balance between providing important safety information to the public with maintaining confidentiality of sensitive investigative details," CDCR said in a statement. "CDCR is fully committed to locating and apprehending Hernandez." Prison officials also said two unidentified corrections officers who transported Hernandez on Dec. 2 are still on the job, but in different roles. Inmate on the run in Delano killed a man in 2018 after leaving LA County bar "Both are still correctional officers assigned to other institution positions and are working in non-transportation assignments at this time," CDCR's statement read. Hernandez was serving a first-degree murder sentence of 80 years to life with the possibility of parole. Hernandez shot and killed a man near a Lynwood bar in June 2018 and had been serving the sentence since 2019 at North Kern State Prison followed by Kern Valley State Prison. The U.S. Marshals are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Cesar Hernandez. Anyone with information is asked to call 661-979-1187.
