Santa Claus comes to town during annual MentorontheLake fire engine ride
Dec 13, 2024
Sirens wailed and lights flashed throughout the streets of Mentor-on-the-Lake on Dec. 7 but there was no emergency, just an early Christmas gift to the residents, especially the young ones, of the city.
Santa Claus toured the streets of Mentor-on-the-Lake atop a fire department engine while his “elves” handed out candy canes as part of the annual “Santa Run”.
Chief James Pechatsko said the Mentor-on-the-Lake Santa event has been a holiday tradition for the fire department for well over 40 years.
The Firefighters Association covers the cost of the candy canes that are handed out to the residents. Every year, the members of the department along with their family and Mayor David Eva come out to help spread Christmas cheer. They walk the city handing out candy canes and escort Santa as he rides high atop the fire truck.
Pechatsko said a family member who was helping this year stated: “It warms my heart to see the joy in the children’s eyes as they see Santa coming”.
Pechatsko also passed along a quote left on the department’s Facebook page:
“When my family lived in MOL, my children looked forward to the Saturday or two before Christmas. They listened for the fire truck and enjoyed a treat from Santa and crew. It was fun for everyone. Thank you, Santa!”
This year, Santa was played by Pechatsko and Firefighter/Paramedic Josh Sundbom.
Eva previously told The News-Herald each year the event is always a special day.
“As an annual event, once the calendar switches to December, many residents ask about the date of the ‘Santa Run,’ ” Eva said. “Our fire department and their families participate every year. Our residents appreciate this and are grateful for this along with the daily service provided by our firefighter/paramedics.”
“We have residents of all ages who look forward to this event every year,” Eva added. “It’s nice to see our community service is appreciated and see the happiness it brings to our community.”
