Transfers Hill and Washington lead Shockers to 81 start

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- Wichita State University's Shocker men's basketball is off to its best start since 2019, sitting at 8-1. Two players impacting their success are transfers Justin Hill and Corey Washington.
The two players currently lead the team in scoring. It's the program's drive for success that's taken them to the top of their game.
"We have to win a championship," said Washington, "That's the goal. This is the year."
"We're just trying to get to that top level, the highest level we can possibly get. We go hard every day in practice, so we know everybody puts in day in and day out," explained Hill.
Through nine games, Hill has put up a team-high 131 points and 32 assists.
"He's a great on-ball defender," said WSU head men's basketball coach Paul Mills. "[Hill] does a terrific job of taking care of the ball. He's got an on-off switch, and so he's got to learn how to keep that thing on at all times. But you can see when he has different gears."
The transfer Georgia has a competitive edge that's made him into a leader around the Roundhouse.
"Just knowing what winning basketball takes and what winning basketball from a point guard position looks like. And just getting everybody in the right spots and stepping up when he needs to. But at the same time, just running the show and being that floor general that we need," said Shocker senior guard Xavier Bell.

Corey Washington came in from Saint Peters, scored 117 points, and led the team with 58 boards.
"I don't think it's an exaggeration to say doubles-doubles should be the norm for Corey," added Mills, "He's going to find a way. If you come in here sometime in between nine and 11, you usually see Corey Washington in here. He's putting in work."
"He's just a really good mix of skill and he works really hard, plays really hard," said Shocker senior guard Harlond Beverly. "He didn't shoot any three-pointers as a freshman. And now he's shooting 40% at the moment. So that really speaks to how hard he works."
The guys say they were able to adjust to the program quickly with the help of the great players surrounding them.
"Just the trust that my teammates and coaches have in me. They put me in positions where I just play my game, and it just works out fine," said Washington.
"We have a lot of people in this team that can do a lot of things and facilitate, give people the ball when they're open in the right spots. And I don't think I played with that before. So they really helped me a lot," explained Hill.
Coach Mill's high expectations have also kept them dedicated.
"You can't do nothing. Get away with it out here. He catches everything. So, yeah, just being accountable at all times," said Hill.
"He has a standard, and he doesn't change that for anybody. And I just took that challenge. I'm going to meet that requirement every time. I'm a winner. So anything around winning, I'm all in," said Washington.
Their want to win is shared by all the Shocks.
"When you just get a good group of players together that you feel like you can accomplish something special, that kind of just makes everybody want to come in and even work harder and work towards a goal. So it's been fun having those guys around," said Beverly.
The Shockers continue their season on the road against DePaul on Saturday, Dec. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
