PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A fatal shooting at a Portsmouth intersection is reigniting calls for stronger crime prevention measures in the community. Portsmouth police responded near the intersection of Prentis Avenue and Race Street around 10:03 p.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they found 32-year-old Anthony Lamont Jones suffering from a gunshot wound. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. No arrests have been made, and police have not released any information on a suspect. Residents living near the scene say they are devastated but not surprised, describing the area as one that has been neglected for too long. “It’s very sad that this has happened because it wasn't this way,” one resident said. “When I first walked into this neighborhood, it was peaceful to the point that I could walk home without any fear … or even be shot, for that matter.” Another resident echoed concerns about safety, pointing to a lack of basic crime preventive measures. “Yeah, they could add some more lights here," the resident said. "We tried getting a camera over here, put a camera over here, and it’s like they don’t care. It’s like this neighborhood is just gone.” The possibility that Jones' body may have been dumped at the intersection is also raising concerns. “That’s very alarming, especially right here at the holidays,” one neighbor said. “It’s devastating for any family to experience that — a body just down in the street like it was nothing." Portsmouth police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact them or submit a tip through the Crime Line. City officials announced they will hold a R.E.S.E.T. walk at 4 p.m. Friday in Portsmouth. The initiative allows city leaders to hear directly from residents. It also aims to address safety concerns and build trust within the community.
