FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Are you dreaming of a White Christmas? Every year we watch closely the opportunity for northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio to experience a magical wintry scene on the holiday!
WANE Winter Outlook ’24-’25: Will it be more wintry this winter?
In order for a Christmas to be designated as a White Christmas, at least one inch of snow needs to be on the ground at 7 AM Christmas morning. This is the official definition from the National Weather Service.
Here is the official definition of a White Christmas.
Historically based on the 1991 to 2020 climate normals, Fort Wayne has approximately a 25 to 40 percent chance of seeing a White Christmas. These numbers edge closer to 50 percent in areas near the Indiana/Michigan border, then rise substantially even farther north.
Here is a national look at White Christmas odds, based on the 1991-2020 climate normals.
Of the past 70 Christmas Days in Fort Wayne, half of them have not had any snow on the ground or any new snow, but about 11 percent of them saw new snow fall on the holiday. About 27 percent of them were a White Christmas, with 1 to 3 inches of snow on the ground, and about 11 percent of them had over three inches of snow depth. This means it is reasonable to say it's really a toss up as to whether Fort Wayne gets a White Christmas...
Since 1954, we've had a White Christmas around half the time in Fort Wayne.
Remarkably, we've alternated between the second warmest Christmas high temperature and very cold temperatures the past five Christmas Days.
We're due for a colder Christmas after alternating between the second warmest Christmas high temperature in Fort Wayne.
If the pattern continues, we're due for a colder Christmas this year, but will it be snowy? Here is some insight from Meteorologist Mark Steinwedel with the National Weather Service Northern Indiana: "It's sort of a tough get…because we're going to have to time everything right…that between now and pretty much the 19th or 20th this month, it looks warmer. So, you're talking no snow in that run. So, it going to have to happen right before Christmas or at Christmas to get that inch of snow on the ground when it's time for 7 AM on Christmas day so…."
