The family of 15-year-old Michael Rowe, who went by Mikey, said he could make anyone smile. They said his death was an act of senseless violence. “He was a beacon of hope and love. He was peaceful. He was caring, considerate, brave, and strong,” said Sarah Rowe, Michael Rowe’s sister.
Michael Rowe was killed on Saturday. Sarah Rowe said her brother loved fishing, video games, and animals and loved to express himself with his clothing style. “He loved what any 15-year-old boy would love. He loved hanging out with his friends and his family,” said Rowe.
Mikey was just shy of his 16th birthday, which would have been at the end of the month. Rowe said her brother hadn't made up his mind yet on what he wanted to do when he grew up but said his future was bright. “It's extremely hard to know that these milestones like Christmas and his birthday and anything in the future that he had was stolen from us," Rowe said.
On Dec. 7, Albuquerque police responded to a laundromat on San Mateo and Zuni. According to a police report, witnesses said a woman, 39-year-old Jamel Coriz, got into an argument over a washing machine with three teens, one of them was Michael Rowe. The argument turned physical and after the fight police said Coriz left.
Coriz later returned with her boyfriend 39-year-old Oscar Orozco who police said chased Michael out of the business. Court documents said surveillance footage showed Orozco chase Michael out to the parking lot when a gunshot was heard, and Michael was killed. “There's never anything that anybody can do that should cause you to take another person’s life...Unfortunately, people chose to create a situation that was unsafe. Mikey was brave and strong and did his very best to de-escalate the situation," said Rowe.
Rowe hopes Mikey’s story will have an impact on the community and create change. “It shouldn't matter if you're at a laundromat or a coffee shop or you want to go for a walk down the street. You should be safe. You should feel safe. You should know that you're safe. You should not be in fear for your life.”
The family hopes to have a vigil soon in Michael’s memory. They are also asking for donations from the community.
Both Orozco and Coriz have been arrested and are charged with murder.
