Congress passes bill aimed at cleaning up abandoned mines

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – A bill helmed by Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich will be heading to President Joe Biden's desk to be signed into law. Congress passed the Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act which will make it easier for state agencies and nonprofits to conduct cleanups and improve water quality.
Xcel Energy plans to install fire-detecting cameras in New Mexico
The Government Accountability Office said there are at least 30,000 abandoned hard rock mines in the United States that pose an environmental risk. Sen. Heinrich says the work is long overdue.
