Nic Trujillo seeks consistency from new team

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Among the plethora of Lobo football players that entered the transfer portal is wide receiver Nic Trujillo. The Rio Rancho native is in the portal with three years of eligibility remaining.
Dating back to his high school days at Cleveland, Trujillo has had a different head coach in each of the past four seasons (Ridenour, Garza, Gonzales, Mendenhall). Trujillo initially intended to return to UNM, however Mendenhall's departure left him wondering if sticking it out through another coaching change was in his best interest.
"I never thought I'd leave," said Trujillo. "I thought I'd be here until I was done playing football. I just want to go somewhere where it's going to stay consistent for the next couple years and just get some consistency and familiarity within a program."
Since entering the portal, Trujillo already has an offer from ULM. New Mexico's offensive coordinator from 2023, Bryant Vincent, is the current head coach at ULM. Trujillo said he has also received interest from other schools.
As for what Trujillo is looking for in his new school, he said that relationships will play a big role in his decision. The now redshirt sophomore is also seeking a role in an offense that utilizes him as a playmaker and he wishes to play right away.
In 2024, his redshirt freshman season, Trujillo recorded 16 receptions for 305 yards and one touchdown.
Even though he entered the portal, Trujillo has no hard feelings towards New Mexico. He said it was his dream to play for the Lobos since he began playing and hopes the next head coach is able to get the program back on track.
"What I want to happen here is a coach that's going to come in and he's not going to leave after a year and he's not going to use New Mexico as a stepping stone," Trujillo said. "Someone that wants to be here and wants to win here. It can be done, we showed it this year, we just barely missed it. Somebody that's willing to rebuild the program without leaving after a year or two."
Trujillo said does not have a timetable for when he will commit to a new school, however, he prefers to do it sooner rather than later. He said he is open to returning to UNM if he has not committed anywhere by the time New Mexico's next head coach is appointed.
