Frayser high school funds get favorable recommendation
Dec 11, 2024
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Sent with a favorable recommendation — that was the vote Wednesday in a Shelby County Commissioners meeting for more money to build a new high school in Frayser.
We've been telling you about the push to build the new school, with the county mayor now calling for an added $34 million, bringing the county's total investment to $112 million.
The county says this latest investment overall will help other schools as well. Multiple students and a principal said the new school building will represent hope and opportunity.
County Mayor Lee Harris sat before the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, joined by MSCS' superintendent, for a lengthy discussion in front of a large crowd.
Students from Frayser were in attendance, surrounding commissioners and making their case for the big investment.

Pictures were shown of the current dilapidated conditions at Frayser's current Trezevant High School. That includes cramped classrooms and leaking roofs, the principal told commissioners.
"It will be a beacon of light," Trezevant High Principal Eric Brent said of the new school. "A place where scholars feel valued, inspired and empowered to reach their full potential."
But there were still questions from the commission.
"I do want Frayser to get a new school but we've gotta look at the numbers and I've gotta look at all this again," Commissioner Amber Mills said.
The full board is expected to vote this Monday afternoon.
