Braedyn Locke becomes third Wisconsin quarterback to enter transfer portal

Wisconsin’s quarterback room is going to look quite different next season.
Two days after the team’s opening day starter, Tyler Van Dyke, decided to enter the transfer portal, his injury replacement, Braedyn Locke, followed him on Wednesday.

Locke, who transferred from Mississippi State prior to the 2023 season, was supposed to serve as the backup the past two seasons. But injuries to 2023 starter Tanner Mordecai and Van Dyke forced him into action. The Texas native started 12 games and played extended snaps in 14, going 4-8 as a starter and losing the other two games he came in as an injury replacement.
While Locke had his moments, most notably leading a comeback win at Illinois in 2023 and putting up 389 yards and three touchdowns against Purdue in October, his struggles and those of the offense were a constant storyline throughout his time. He threw for 2,713 yards with 18 touchdowns during his career, but turnovers (10 interceptions in 2024), especially in key moments, were a significant issue. That was never more true when he threw a pick-6 against Penn State that turned the entire game on its head. Batted passes were also an issue.
In addition to Van Dyke and Locke, class of 2023 quarterback Cole LaCrue also hit the portal. As it stands, the scholarship quarterbacks that make up the room are redshirt freshman Mabrey Mettauer, along with true freshmen Carter Smith and Landyn Locke. Wisconsin is expected to add at least one quarterback from the portal.
