It was closed Wednesday morning due to mechanical problems with the zip-mobile causing added stress to some commuters.
KHON2 asked some commuters how their journey's on the road went.
"I typically leave like 7 a.m., 7:15 a.m., today I left at 6:30 a.m.," said Jess Lucas, Mililani Mauka resident.
"And how long did it take you to get here?" asked KHON2.
"I was still late. I start at 8, and I got here at 8:10 a.m." added Lucas.
The zipper lane stayed closed in the morning, forcing commuters on the H-1 to leave a little earlier or spend up to an extra hour in traffic.
According to Department of Transportation officials, the primary Zipmobile has a computer issue, the back-up machine has a brake problem and the thirs was out since late November because the wheel studs broke off.
"And we thought of the impacts of having the zipper lane open for 2 hours beyond what it normal is and the traffic impacts are tremendous in the afternoon," said Ed Sniffen, Dept. Of Transportation Director. "If we cannot close it just like we had in 2015, there could be a six to seven hour commute for everybody going home. And we wanted to avoid that."
"We really have to do a better job at creating jobs out in different areas throughout Oahu so we can live, work, play in close proximity and we have to be a lot more diligent about that," said Sen. Donovan Dela Cruz, (D) Mililani, Wahiawa, Whitmore Village.
"We have to find a way to expand Skyline so it's usable for everyone, but also making sure that we complete it to the point that it does make sense," said Rep. Darius kila, (D) Honokai Hale, Nanakuli, Maili. "It cannot just stop in Ala Moana. It needs to go to these critical access points for people to get to work."
City transportation officials say they heard the Skyline and bus systems seemed to be more full this morning.
State DOT says technicians are here from California, and says it is confident the zipper lane can be opened and closed reliably for the morning commute.
"Well I'm hoping that it'll get open soon, so you know, we'll have a smooth ride as soon as possible," said Delos Santos.
"Please fix it ASAP so that all the people that can use it are off the roads so that I can get to work quicker, really appreciate it," said Lucas.
