FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- Just two weeks before Christmas, a Forsyth County couple is picking up the pieces after their home caught fire. While out and having fun with their grandkids on Saturday night, Tammy and Benjamin Young say they received an unforgettable call from their neighbors in the Belews Creek community. "Said our house is on fire and ... everybody around here said they heard a big explosion," Benjamin said. According to Forsyth County EMS, around 6:40 p.m. on Saturday, they responded to a house fire on the 6100 block of Reidsville Road. The Youngs say their family dog, Sophie, was inside. "My dog was in there ... We lost a pet. It was like a kid to us because our kids are gone," Benjamin said. Unfortunately, the Youngs were too late to save Sophie and some valuable belongings. "We bought all the Christmas presents and had them ready to put under the tree, and they're all gone," Tammy said. One of the few items that survived the fire was a sheet of paper that read, "Hope all your happy memories will help to ease your sadness." It's a saying that the Youngs are leaning on for comfort as well as the surrounding community who are rallying around them this holiday season. According to Forsyth County EMS, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Youngs say they do plan to rebuild their home. A GoFundMe has been set up.
