JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) -- A new cultural arts center is coming to James Island. Wednesday night, town officials met with residents to see what they want it to look like.Residents shared ideas of what they hope to have on James Island. The Palmetto Peace choir are hoping to have a space where they're able to rehearse and perform "We are hoping to see a space where we can continue our rehearsals, we meet with children ages 5 to 95 so to continue our rehearsals but also a place to have a performance hall in our same rehearsal homes," said Danielle Loveless, with the Palmetto Peace Choir. James Island Mayor Brook Lyon said they are open to doing anything they hear from the public. She says the arts center will be for the people of James Island to enjoy as well as the rest of the Charleston area. "The sky is the limit! Its going to depend on what the people want," said Mayor Lyon. Back in November, the town decided to move forward with building a new cultural arts center after learning repairs at the existing center would be expensive. Residents would have to fund the repairs on a building the town doesn't own. While the new center is being constructed, current arts programing will take place at James Island town hall. Residents say its important for the arts to have a space to flourish in their community. "It's so important to our community as a whole and bringing them together in an in-person way in this digital world we're living. In the performing arts and all the arts are really wonderful way for humans to stay connected and build community and build stronger structures around us as a society," said Regina Ruopoli. The new art center will be constructed on the James Island's Hillman lot property next to town hall and the town is hoping to break ground in the next 6 months.
