Mold problems persist in North Dakota cities

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — A recent study revealed that Fargo, Grand Forks, and Bismarck are among the top 150 moldiest cities in the United States. While mold may seem like a minor nuisance, it can cause serious health problems, including breathing issues and skin irritation.
Mold thrives in damp environments, often hiding in unseen areas such as walls and ceilings. According to Environmental Health Administrator Anton Sattler, identifying the source of moisture is key to tackling the issue.
“Is it a leaking roof, pipe, or window? High humidity or flooding? Find the source and fix the problem first,” he said.
Not all mold is harmful, but its severity depends on the amount and type present.
Sattler explains, “A small speck on the wall isn’t as concerning as mold growing three feet high.”

Though not all dark molds are the infamous “black mold,” large mold colonies can lead to health issues, including:
• Respiratory problems: Wheezing, difficulty breathing, and sinus congestion
• Eye irritation: Redness, burning, and watering
• Skin issues: Irritation or rashes
• Other symptoms: Sore throat, coughing, and even fever in some cases
If you suspect mold is affecting your health, consult a healthcare provider immediately. Preventative measures include fixing leaks, reducing indoor humidity, and addressing moisture buildup promptly.
