METAIRIE, La. (BRPROUD) — Despite not practicing on Wednesday, New Orleans Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi hasn't ruled out quarterback Derek Carr for Sunday's game against the Washington Commanders. Carr suffered an injury to his non-throwing hand in a win over the Giants and is also in concussion protocol. Rizzi said it’s going to be a week-to-week situation with Carr. "He's still dealing with some swelling," Rizzi said Wednesday. "So we'll see if that goes down and see if he can... if he clears the concussion protocol and he's able to do anything at the end of the week." Rizzi also said Carr's injury is non-surgical and he will not be placed on injured reserve. If Carr cannot play Sunday, Rizzi hasn't announced who will start: Jake Haener or Spencer Rattler. "Both Spencer (Rattler) and Jake (Haener) both took reps today (Wednesday), obviously, with Derek not being out there, but those guys took reps in the team periods," Rizzi said. "That'll probably be the same case tomorrow (Thursday). We're just going to evaluate that situation and we're going to name a starter later in the week. We're not going to name a starter right now. We're going to kind of see how that kind of progression plays out first with Derek and then obviously with Jake and Spencer." The last time Carr missed playing time, the Saints handed the offense over to Rattler. The 2024 fifth-round NFL draft was 0-3 as a starter completing 59.6% of his passes for 571 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Rattler was also sacked a whopping 14 times. The rookie out of South Carolina also rushed for 61 yards on nine carries in his three starts. 2025 LSU football schedule released, eight SEC matchups this season Latest News East Baton Rouge Superintendent LaMont Cole gives insight on his 'first 100 days' Five Below’s ‘cozy season’ merch is selling fast New Orleans Saints have yet to rule Derek Carr out for Sunday Louisiana congressman Clay Higgins writes about Donald Trump's assassination attempt 2025 LSU football schedule released, eight SEC matchups this season
