More than 50 pedestrian deaths recorded in Kern County so far in 2024
Dec 11, 2024
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- 55 people have now lost their lives to Kern County's deadly streets in 2024.
The pedestrian killed Tuesday night on Airport Drive in Oildale marked 2024's death toll higher than last year's with 54. There are still 20 days until the end of the year.
The most recent fatal hit occurred Dec. 10, around 7:30 p.m. The California Highway Patrol said a man was crossing the street on bicycle when he fell off onto the street, and a Honda Accord struck him. Officers at the scene said the area is dark and poorly lit. This is a continuing trend in pedestrian fatalities: Out of 55 total in 2024, 43 of them happened at night.
Bakersfield Chief of Police Greg Terry talked to 17's Alex Fisher about the city's response.
"Our primary responsibility around that is enforcement, and trying to slow people down," said Chief Terry. "Going to where really directing our enforcement where collisions occur where the speeds are the highest."
