'This is about politics': CEO of Fresno's Raw Farm on raw milk recall

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The CEO of Fresno-based Raw Farm, LLC says he's the target of an attack at the hands of the FDA and USDA, claiming that the federal agencies are targeting him for political reasons.
Raw milk from the Fresno company was the subject of a recall in November when the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) detected bird flu virus in a retail sample of raw milk from Raw Farm in Fresno. That discovery prompted a voluntary recall.
In December, the USDA announced nationwide milk testing to monitor H5N1 bird flu in the country’s milk supplies and dairy herds, specifically requiring that raw (unpasteurized) milk samples nationwide be collected and shared with the USDA for testing. Raw Farms CEO Mark McAfee says the risks of raw milk are being blown out of proportion due to what he says are the FDA's and USDA's bias against him.
"This is not about science, this is about politics," McAfee said. "PCR, the test they're using to test for the virus cannot detect live virus, it can only detect dead virus. All they found in our milk was dead virus."
According to McAfee, the reported cases of H5N1 in the Central Valley came from mucus farm workers had come in contact with - and had nothing to do with milk.
"This is the biggest non-story," McAfee said. "There is no evidence that [raw milk has] caused illness in people."
McAfee claims that there is a long list of health benefits related to drinking raw milk including, "anti-cancer, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial" properties. He says the process of pasteurization takes away all of those properties - the same process that the FDA and USDA say protects consumers from the dangers of raw milk.
McAfee adds that the resounding support for raw milk from Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is set to become secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services in the Trump administration, has made raw milk a target for the USDA and FDA. McAfee states that there is no scientific basis for raw milk recalls.
"[RFK] told the FDA that if they did not embrace raw milk to pack their bags," McAfee said. "So the FDA is just furious that some of them are going to be sent down the road."
YourCentralValley.com reached out to both the FDA and the USDA for a statement but did not receive a response in time for this article.
Meanwhile, farmers in California are being advised to contact the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s bird flu hotline at 866-922-2473 if they suspect their animals are infected with bird flu.
